“Bridge the gap between information and action“
Dr. Joe Roselle
With over 3,000 books on climate change published each year,
we are awash in information, yet the gap between knowledge
and action persists. My hope is that, like my son sorting trash in the
middle of the night, we begin to feel the same compulsion to act—
not when it’s easy, but when it’s necessary. The time to act is
not tomorrow; it’s now.
Here are the key reasons why it’s unlikely we will reach net zero by 2050, based
on current challenges identified by researchers:
Social Resistance to Change: Many individuals and communities are resistant to altering long-standing habits and lifestyles, even when aware of the environmental impacts. This inertia, fueled
by cultural norms and convenience, slows the adoption of sustainable practices.
Behavioral Inertia: Even with increased awareness about climate issues, there is a gap between knowledge and action. Research shows that people often struggle to change behaviors unless they see immediate personal benefits, leading to delayed or insufficient
Lack of Global Cooperation: Achieving net zero requires unprecedented international collaboration and financing, particularly for developing nations.
Social Fragmentation: The polarization of climate change discussions creates division, where individuals and groups fail to collaborate on solutions. Without collective action, the efforts of a few are overshadowed by the inaction of many.
At Urban Farming Education (UFE), we believe the greatest obstacle to combating climate change is not a lack of information, but the gap between information and action. Despite the publication of over 3,000 books on climate change annually, this wealth of information has not translated into meaningful progress. Many are unwilling or unable to leave a social footprint—a lasting, positive impact on society and the environment. Political divisions, misinformation, and short-term economic interests have further talled action, leaving many unsure of how to respond. UFE’s mission is to close this gap by educating future generations, especially children, who are free from these biases and disillusionments. By empowering young people through hands-on learning, critical thinking, and collaboration, we aim to create a culture of environmental responsibility that produces measurable, sustainable outcomes.
Leave a social footprintTake action now before it’s too late.
Only together we can make a difference.
